A First For Palm Island Graduates

Twin brothers Kenny and Neil Baira and Cassian Turner are taking the opportunity to build themselves a great career in the industry.

Three students from Palm Island’s Bwgcolman (Bow-col-man) Community School are the first high school graduates on the island to go directly into employment after securing traineeships with Mendi Constructions.

Mendi Constructions are working on a joint venture with Hutchinson Builders on a 59-lot housing subdivision on the island. Indigenous Program Coordinator at Hutchinson Builders, Mark Kucks, has worked closely with both the Palm Island community and Mendi Constructions to develop one of the first indigenous training plans under the government’s new training policy.

A second generation Townsville-based company, we at Mendi take pride in providing training, employment and business opportunities for the Palm Island community.
