Stuart Landfill Cell 3A

Townsville City Council

Overview

The Stuart Landfill Cell 3A project is located at Council’s Stuart Landfill facility south of Townsville adjacent the Bruce Highway, off Vantassel Street.  Valued at $4.7M, the project is required to provide the facility with additional landfill capacity to meet the needs of the city.

Scope of Works

Approx. 39,000t of ‘Clay Rich’ fill material will be imported to site and used to construct a 300mm thick floor and 3.5m high perimeter bunds to the new Cell 3A.

State of the art lining and gas/leachate collection techniques have been adopted in the design of this project to ensure best practice environmental outcomes.  Effective implementation of specialist construction methods is key to the successful delivery of this project, Mendi Group will draw on the experience of having recently completed the Cell 2C Interface Liner project.  Construction elements vary across the project depending on location, however, typically include the following:

  • Geocomposite Strip Drain system
  • Clay Rich fill material placement to Cell 3A floor and perimeter bunds;
  • Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL);
  • Geomembrane (LLDPE);
  • Cushion Textile;
  • Bridging and Protection layers;
  • Uniaxial Geogrid;
  • Leachate Collection pipe system in drainage aggregate;
  • Gas collection pipe system; and
  • Engineered fill Protection layer.

Site works are progressing well and the project remains on schedule for completion late September 2020.
